PBS KIDS' Design Squad Nation - great STEM resources and lessons




PBS KIDS' Design Squad Nation is an Emmy Award winning program with STEM related videos, activities, games and an interactive community. There is also a Parents and Educators section with lesson plans, curriculum guides, and more. 

There are some great new features to it, including a Solar System unit with games, activities, and lesson resources about our solar system, a roller coaster project where students compete to build the best roller coaster out of poster board, and a variety of other resources. 

Topics include science, flying, hobbies, sports, and much more. 

This is a great, free resource for educators, parents and students and well worth the time to explore it.

The Physics Front - teaching resources for Physics


The Physics Front

The Physics Front is a free site that contains teaching resources on Physics and Physical Science. The resources are searchable and are arranged by level: K-8 Physical Science, Physics First, Conceptual Physics, Algebra Based, and AP / Calculus. Resources are then organized by topic.

It's part of the ComPADRE education community resources.

There are lesson plans, links to other resources, technology, links, and other resources to help educators when teaching Physics or Physical Science. It's another great resource to add to your collection.

Symbolab - Science and Math Search Engine - search with symbols too



Symbolab is a site I learned about from David Kapuler on his blog. It is a "Science and Math Search Engine" and makes it easier to find science content online. It specifically searches for science content using semantic search tools.

You can search from the site, or use a free download for Chrome and Firefox.

The other unique feature that truly sets it apart is that it lets you use math and science symbols and equations to search. This is especially helpful when searching for topics that are related to a formula or symbol, vs. just a word.

STEM Flix - STEM videos for middle school classes


Northrop Grumman Foundation's STEM Flix™

STEM Flix is a STEM Video series for middle school classes created by the Northrop Grumman Foundation and Science Bob. The videos include demonstrations that engage the students and then explore STEM career fields and topics and how they are applied in everyday life.

There are two videos - Having Fun with STEM and Fun with Microelectronics - and the site also has instructions for doing experiments shown in the films, as well as fact sheets on STEM areas.

How To Smile - collection of math and science resources



How To Smile is a collection of math and science resources for teachers and students. There are activities that help teachers connect science and math to pretty much anything, including things in the students' homes.

The site is hosted by a group of science museums and collects STEM education materials from the web, as well as from educators.

The site is searchable, has tons of activities organized by topic and searchable, comments and sharing, and much more. There is a newsletter to keep up to date on changes to the site, as well as a mobile app.


There are some really great activities that can help students learn and explore topics in science and math.

What Engineering, the E in STEM, means to K-12 education



STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) is a term used to describe having these four topics integrated into K-12 education. It is an important topic and integrating STEM topics into any class can help students learn and explore. However, many educators aren't sure what this means or how to incorporate STEM topics into their classrooms, especially the "engineering" part.

The Opportunity Equation has a great article, "The “E” in STEM: Clarifying What Engineering Education Means for K-12". This article helps to explain what engineering would look like in K-12 education. Engineering and education experts shared their thoughts about the following questions:  What is engineering and what are the essential components that you feel ought to be included in K-12 education? What is the value of engineering education at the K-12 level? What are some examples of promising practices in K-12 engineering education?

This is a great resource to help explain the concept of engineering in K-12 education and how to implement it.

As a former engineer, I use engineering concepts in my classes on a regular basis and I see how it helps my students. I also use engineering concepts in my daily life, showing how important and useful this topic is to anyone.

Science Niblets - The Science Behind Everyday Topics



Science Niblets is a cool site I learned about from my PLN on Twitter today that explores the science of everyday topics.

The site has articles that describe and explain scientific topics including natural phenomena, biology, technology, physics, and more all related to things we experience in our daily lives.

The articles are geared towards the general public and are short and easy to understand. They provide a great way for students to learn more about science topics and can be useful for beginning learners, ESL/ELL, and even for advanced science students to learn something new. You can search the site by topic too.

You can also ask science questions on the site and they will post an answer, as well as reader answers. There is even a section on teaching reading using science. There are also recommendations and reviews of science books and educational toys.

I'm going to use it as a starting point for some of my lessons, as well as ideas for relating topics to everyday life.

Take a look and share it with your students and colleagues.

Sikorsky STEM Challenge - real world engineering for high school students

I was an engineer for 10 years before deciding to become an educator and work to help other students become engineers and scientists. I was an Aerospace engineer and worked for companies like Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky Aircraft.

Sikorsky Aircraft, a leader in helicopters around the world, is headquartered in Stratford, CT, where I live, and has a huge office and plant in Bridgeport, CT where I teach. Their helicopters, like the Blackhawk and S-76, can be seen flying overhead all the time. I loved running out side to watch them when I was a kid.

Sikorsky has always had a great relationship with the surrounding community and works with schools on many different projects. I'm very pleased to be part of the Sikorsky STEM Challenge, a program started last year, that has students working on a real world engineering project, from start to finish, including management, organization, team work, design, research, engineering calculations and more.

The program is being run in partnership with CT Innovations, Sikorsky and CT Corsair.
The challenge provides high schools students with the opportunity to apply the lessons of the classroom to the technical problems that are being faced in the workplace.
A team of Sikorsky Innovations engineers working with Connecticut Corsair have designed a challenge for a group of selected local high schools in Connecticut. The students and teachers/coaches will have an opportunity to meet the engineers who have designed the challenge and work closely with them in developing their possible solutions.

CT Corsair is working to bring an F4U-4 Corsair fighter back to flying condition. The Corsair is the official State of CT aircraft and was built here (and the engines were built in CT by Pratt & Whitney). It was used extensively in World War II and the Korean War. Students are working on real projects to make that happen. Last year, the three schools involved designed a new engine mount for the aircraft. This year's projects are still being set up. There are 14 schools participating this year. 

The program starts with kickoff event in September at a local airport where CT Corsair has it's facility. There is no cost to the schools at all and the program provides transportation to events, Sikorsky Engineers as mentors, materials and resources, such as SolidWorks CAD software.

The program has a resource, iHUB, that will be used for communications, posting of resources, posting student work, and more. It's similar to Edmodo in many ways, but bigger and used by corporations. 

I will be blogging about my experience, and my students' experiences, in this program. It's a great example of industry and education working together to support our students.

Incredible, Awesome, Amazing video from NASA during shuttle launch




This is just an incredible and amazing video from NASA that was taken using camera's on the Solid Rocket Boosters of the Space Shuttle during a launch. There is even sound, and some comments on the video. The video also shows the time in the upper left corner and the speed on the upper right corner.

There are multiple camera's used and the sound is very interesting to listen too.

This is one of those videos that is a great resource to get kids interested and excited about something.

Wonderville - awesome, fun, educational science resources



Wonderville is a great, free site I just learned about from an article in Tech & Learning magazine. Wonderville is an award winning site that has interactive science activities that are fun and educational. There are over 30 games on Wonderville that help students learn about science while having fun. There are also puzzles, activity sheets and crosswords, videos exploring real-life applications of science and behind the scenes looks at science careers. The site even has some fun comics that entertain while teaching science facts.

The materials are very good, available for a wide range of grade and ability levels and cover many areas of science. There are also pages for students, families, and teachers to help you use the site and materials.

EngineerGuy - great videos and resources on how things work



EngineerGuy is a very cool site by Bill Hammack. He explores and explains technology and the human side of technology, in videos and radio pieces, along with some books.

He teaches at the University of Illinois, was a US Diplomat (Senior Science Adviser at the Department of State), and has received awards for his work.

The videos and radio shows have explored nanotechnology, smart phones, mood rings, new inventions, light bulbs, smoke detectors, the accelerometer in a smart phone and much more. The videos are well done, explain the technology in an easy to understand way, and are very interesting.



The videos are a great way to learn about technology and different topics, as well as to share with your students. The videos can be viewed on his site (they are hosted on YouTube) and you can also listen to his radio shows and read different white papers he has written.

I will be using some of the videos as introductions to topics or to get my students engaged and excited about some topics.

CPEP Day 2012 - Central High Team wins big at STEM Competition






CPEP (Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program) Day 2012 was held this past Saturday, May 19th, at the XL Center in Hartford, CT.

CPEP's mission is to help under-represented students explore, prepare for, and reach their full potential in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. CPEP is an after school activity that provides students with the opportunity to explore STEM careers and topics and apply STEM knowledge and skills to hands on projects. CPEP day is the culmination of their efforts where they compete against other schools in different events. CPEP is for Middle School and High School students and competitions are separated by category.

Some of the projects students work on are Roller Coasters, Battery Powered Boats, Maglev trains, Mousetrap Cars, Aerodynamics, Egg Drop, and others. The students learn about the science behind each topic and then design and build models for each topic. At CPEP day, the students compete to see whose project is the best. Points are awarded for many different aspects, including appearance, creativity, and function. 

Central High School has placed at CPEP Day every year since CPEP was restarted at CHS in 2009.

Building Big - great STEM projects and labs from PBS




Building Big is a great site from PBS that has lesson plans, projects, labs, and activities for teachers to use in their classrooms. The topics are on buildings and structures, including Bridges, Domes, Skyscrapers, Dams and Tunnels. It's based on the PBS television series Building Big.

There are interactive labs, educator's guides, challenges, data on the world's structures, and information about engineering and engineers.

The labs are flash-based interactive activities that let students explore forces, materials, loads, and shapes and get information about each topic.



The activities are fun and educational and the resources can be scaffolded for any level.

Little Shop of Physics - great program and resources for education




Little Shop of Physics is a great resource on Physics. It's an outreach program from Colorado State University that won a Google RISE Award. The program teams is a group of science educators and science students based at Colorado State University that help students do science in creative ways.

The site has some great links, experiment and activity ideas and more, including some webinars.

It's great for any science teacher to get some great, creative ideas for teaching science.

Google RISE Awards - awards to organizations working with K-12+ students in STEM


Google  Google RISE Awards

The Google RISE (Roots in Science and Engineering) Awards 2012 are here. The Google RISE awards promote and support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and CS (Computer Science) education initiatives by awarding grants to organizations working with K-12 and Higher Ed students to provide enrichment programs in STEM and CS.

Awards range from $10,000 - $25,000 in the US and Canada and 500-10,000 EUR in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Ideal K-12 & university STEM programs and projects should:

  • Inspire excitement in STEM and CS
  • Improve, advance and enrich students' STEM and/or CS education
  • Include hands-on learning activities in STEM and/or CS education

Program Guidelines

  • Google RISE Awards are specific to STEM and CS educational and outreach programs
  • Applications are encouraged from organizations and educational institutions regardless of the socio-economic status of the students they serve
  • Please note that the RISE team is not able to provide one on one consultations during the review process (both prior to applying and after applications have been submitted) to ensure no bias is given to specific organizations
  • We will be asking for feedback and updates from the successful awardees to help us shape and develop the RISE Awards for future years

Tinkercad - web based, free CAD app


Tinkercad

Tinkercad is a free, web based, CAD app that runs in your browser (need webGL enabled). It's easy to use and has some great features. Many CAD systems that engineers use are very complicated with thousands of features (I've used CATIA, ProEngineer, AutoCad, Cadkey) that students won't need.

Tinkercad allows you to create 3D models of pretty much anything, and even export them to 3D printers. The site has a getting started page that walks you through how to use it.

There is also a community of users for support and help.

This is a great resource for students and teachers to use in STEM Classes, or any class for that matter, to draw 3D models.

STEM Connector - one stop shop for STEM resources and information


STEMconnector - The One Stop Shop for STEM Education

STEM Connector is a website that has a huge amount of resources, information, links and news about STEM in education. There are STEM organizations (national, state, local) listed by subject, area, groups, programs, and much more.

It's a great site to go to for STEM resources, news, ideas and more. You can search the different STEM organizations to find more resources, student projects, and more. There is also STEM daily news and a blog with more information and resources.

Jamie and Adam TESTED is a site from Mythbusters Jaime and Adam. The site explores new breakthroughs and topics in science and engineering, exploration, nature, emerging technologies and new products. They explore these topics in depth, including the hows and whys about them.

There are articles, links, videos and much more about all these topics. It's a great resource for STEM classes to get topic ideas, research, news, and to learn some cool things. There are even some pretty cool how-to videos and articles to do some pretty interesting things.



I've found some great things to use with my Physics classes and gotten some great ideas for projects.

TinkerBox - free physics puzzle educational game on iOS



TinkerBox is a free physics puzzle game for iOS. It has interesting science facts and teachers basic engineering concepts, in a fun game. You can create machines and share them with others as well as trying to solve the physics-based puzzles and mechanical concepts. It takes creativity and problem solving skills to be successful.

It is from Autodesk, creators of the CAD software AutoCad.

This is a great app for students in physics or engineering, or anyone who likes problem solving and puzzles.

STEM and our Planet - Environmental issues in STEM Education


National Environmental Education Week 2010
National Environmental Education Week is next week, April 15-21, 2012, right before Earth Day. The site for it has some great resources for teachers, including lesson ideas and resources.

One resource that I like is an infographic entitled "STEM and Our Planet" that has information, data, and resources for relating STEM Topics to the Environment.

The infographic and the site are great ways to incorporate Environmental issues and science into STEM topics.
